16th Annual Literary Awards

JIM STONE GRAND PRIZE MEMORIAL AWARD

Each of the following three categories will have a $100
first place prize winner and two honorable mentions. All
winners will receive a certificate. There is a $3 fee for
each entry. See Guidelines Section for full details.

  1. Poetry can use any subject and any form limited to one single spaced page
  2. Fiction can use any subject limited to 1,500 words
  3. Non-Fiction can use any subject limited to 1,500 words

The entry fee for each of the remaining nine categories is $2. There will be four awards:

  • $20 First Place
  • $10 Second Place
  • $5 Third Place
  • Honorable Mention

Certificates will be awarded for all winners.

Prose:
Prose entries are limited to 1,000 words

  1. Essay or Article - - Ozarks Related
  2. Short Story - - Any Genre
  3. Nostalgia/Reminiscence
  4. Humor - - Any Subject
  5. Essay or Opinion Piece

Poetry:
Poetry entries are limited to one single spaced page

  1. Rhyming - - Any Subject and Any Form
  2. Comic Verse - - Any Form
  3. Free Verse - - Any Subject
  4. Haiku - - Traditional (5, 7, 5 - - Nature Theme)

Guidelines for Entries:

  1. Alll entries must be the original, unpublished work of the contestant.
  2. Do not enter the same prose or poetry in more than one category.
  3. All manuscripts must be typed on 8 1/2 X 11 paper in standard manuscript form.
  4. Prose must be double spaced.
  5. Poetry must be single spaced.
  6. Except for Haiku, all entries must have a title.
  7. Place the category name and number, plus the number of
    words (for prose) in the upper left corner of each entry. List
    the poetry form where applicable.
  8. DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME ON THE ENTRY. Include a cover
    sheet listing ALL entries by category name and number, title,
    and the first line of the manuscript or poem. Put your name,
    address, phone number and e-mail address on the cover sheet.
  9. Keep all originals, no copies will be returned. No entries or
    winners will be published.
  10. Winners will be announced and awards given at the October,
    2009 regular SWG meeting or mailed to those unable to attend.
  11. DEADLINE: All entries must be postmarked no later than
    October 1, 2009. SWG is not responsible for lost, misdirected, or postage-due entries.
  12. For a list of winners, please include a SASE with you entry.
  13. No limit on entries per category. However, no entrant may win
    more than one award per category entered, regardless of the number of entries.
  14. Make all checks payable to the Springfield Writers' Guild Contest
